Summary of Experience

Over 20 years IT experience in highly technical systems support, infrastructure and programming roles.

Peer group recognition as a technical “guru.”

Experience as (or with):

OpenVMS systems administrator (“20 year man”)

Windows 2000/2003 systems administrator

Internet services support (SMTP postmaster, DNS, NTP, WWW…)

Performance and tuning (systems, hardware, OS, network…)

CommVault Galaxy (QiNetix) – researched market, proposed, and implemented

Project Manager (on time, on budget)

Network designer and manager

Technical evaluator

EMC2 CLARiiON management and performance analysis

Problem solver/Troubleshooter – and I’m good at it.

Network Protocol/Network Application analyst

UNIX systems administrator

ALL-IN-1 (Digital Office Server) manager

ORACLE database administrator (stale)

Good oral and excellent written communication skills

Experienced technical writer (including producing detailed evaluation and analysis of responses to Government tenders).

Work well alone or as a member of a team

A team builder and networker.

Self-starter with initiative.

Recently building or augmenting skills in:

Windows 2003 Advanced Server & Active Directory

Exchange 2003

Red Hat Enhanced Linux (RHEL) 4.x for DNS and NTP

Check Point Firewall-1 (Mangement I and II plus hands-on)

EMC2 CLARiiON and Brocade switches

StorageTek libraries (Horizon series)

Trend suite of Antivirus/anti-malware applications

Virtualisation

I own and operate my own moderate-sized test lab including a CommVault QiNetix CommCell with a 20TB StorageTek Timberwolf 9710 tape library using Galaxy for backup and DataMigrator for bulk storage.  Most services are delivered with FreeBSD (Unix) and open-source software.

My interests and focus lie in the “nuts and bolts” of infrastructure, performance tuning, troubleshooting and internet security/services.

I freely admit to being somewhat of a perfectionist; if you’re going to do something, you might as well do it right the first time.

My approach is holistic – treating the network as a whole, not as disconnected and unrelated parts.

My methodology is based on more than 20 years in large-scale computing (mini- and mainframe) where uptime is essential, and change-management is mandatory.

DATE:

November 1995 – May 1999

COMPANY:

Federal Department of Health & Family Services

ROLE:

Contractor

Duties

Support their national OpenVMS environment.  Initial plan was to "pilot" remote, centralised management of state based VAX ALL-IN-1 systems. As usual, the role expanded considerably.

ALL-IN-1 and PMDF were decommissioned and replaced with Lotus Notes.

Operating Systems

Stabilised each system in turn, as responsibility passed from state staff; each system required a substantial effort in tuning and repair, as the VAXes were a low priority.  OpenVMS 6.1 is still the current version, because there is no need to change it - the systems are very stable.

Crashes are now extremely rare, instead of being a regular occurrence.

Windows NTW 4 (SP3) is the current desktop environment, having just migrated from WfWg 3.11.

Have never even seen most of the systems managed! They are hundreds or thousands of KM away.

AlphaVMS 6.2 workstation, running POLYCENTER Console Manager keeps a watchful eye on all.

Networks

The H&FS Domain Name Service (DNS) was approaching basket case status. Helped Communications staff understand the problems, and then created new structure for them.

Helped diagnose several complex interactions between unreliable network components and application level software components.

Web server set up at home to gain further in-depth knowledge about the practice (FreeBSD, Apache).

Applications

Digital ALL-IN-1 3.1, TeamLinks 2.5-003 was the pervasive platform, along with WordPerfect 6.1, Excel 5 and Paradox.

PMDF for Internet Mail, Oracle databases.

Provided advice, support, and utilities for migration from ALL-IN-1 to Microsoft Exchange.  Configured mail system to provide a transparent but progressive migration.

E-Commerce support

ALL-IN-1 to Lotus Notes migration

MIMEsweeper (E-Mail content scanning) – leveraged own code with this tool to produce a superb combination that “learned” about new junk material and send it for classification and possible elimination.

Debugging/Fault Resolution/Help Desk

All of the substantial problems (including the supposedly "intractable" ones) that existed before I arrive were resolved; these included: WordPerfect printing on VMS, DNS (Domain Name Service) problems, ALL-IN-1 File Cabinet Server instability.

Provided Help Desk escalation service; very few calls indeed are passed on to suppliers. Almost all problems are resolved internally, giving better service to the end user.

Internet Connectivity

H&FS use PMDF from InnoSoft as their Internet Email gateway (highly recommended!)

Wrote utility to export the ALL-IN-1 DDS (Distributed Directory Service) database to a flat data files. This required a long and labour-intensive cleanup of duplicate and "dead" addresses. These files are used to build the PMDF "aliases" and "reverse" files so that each person has a single email address that does not change; e.g. Wayne.Myles@Health.Gov.Au. This guarantees long-term stability and convenience.

H&FS used a combination of HTTP and SMTP-based E-Commerce solutions.  Provided a commercial-grade backbone for same, which never lost a message.

Created E-Mail content scanning utilities to eliminate many Gigabytes of wasted space from “junk” attachments, games, videos and the like.
